YouthLink Social Savvy Field Trip
Social Savvy is a full-day, immersive field trip combining Social 9 review, crime prevention and history. Designed to help Grade 9 students deepen their understanding of key Social Studies concepts, while seeing how those ideas show up in the real world. Built in consultation with a Master’s level IB-level Social Studies educator, this curriculum-connected experience prepares students for their Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) and invites them to engage critically with history, policing, and community safety.
Program Intel:
- Location: Calgary Police Discovery Centre
- When: April–June (Mon–Thurs)
- Who: Grade 9 classes (within Calgary city limits)
- Capacity: 2 classes/day, max 35 students each
- Length: 4.5 hours
What To Expect?
- Exploration of our cutting-edge police museum
- Three hands-on workshops led by our YouthLink experts
- A bonus workshop to take back to class for continued PAT preparation
Through this exciting program, students will be challenged to interpret a variety of sources, both modern and historical, in our engaging museum spaces. This experience connects directly to the social curriculum with emphasis on skills and attitudes that will prepare students for writing their exam, while reviewing the content in an engaging and fun way. Students will participate in three hands-on workshops in this program, with the following themes: Repealing historical laws in Canada, the history of EDI at CPS, and interpreting Calgary’s gang war and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

This program brings Social 9 content into a new, relevant context using real stories, real challenges, and real conversations to spark critical thinking. Students leave better prepared for their PATs and with a stronger understanding of how systems, power, and justice continue to shape our communities.

Who Can Apply?
- Who: Grade 9 classes within Calgary city limits
- When: Mondays to Thursdays, April through June
- Capacity: Two classes per day (max. 35 students per class)
- Length: Full-day (4.5 hours)

This program fills faster than a speeding patrol car, so here’s how to stay ahead of the game:
- Registration opens: August 17
- First-come, first-serve (seriously, set a reminder)
- Designate one teacher contact for your school to handle the booking
- Have this intel ready:
- Number of classes you’re bringing
- Estimated student numbers (max 35 per class)
- Preferred months and unavailable dates
If the program fills up, don’t worry, you can hop on the cancellation waitlist, and we’ll do our best to get your students in.
