affordable Calgary PD Day Camp

They’ll investigate it. Experience it. And meet the people who make it happen.

More Than a Camp. A Behind-the-Scenes Experience.

There are plenty of great camps for kids in Calgary. The Best of Policing is different. This isn’t simply a camp with a police theme. It gives campers the opportunity to step inside the world of policing and experience parts of it that most people never get to see.

Over two days, campers will meet real Calgary Police Service professionals, explore forensic science, investigate historical cases, take on challenges, go behind the scenes at a police garage, and experience the Calgary Police Discovery Centre after hours. These aren’t activities pulled from a textbook. They’re opportunities to meet the people, explore the spaces, and experience the skills that are part of real policing.

What Will Campers Experience?

Over two action-packed days, campers will take part in activities inspired by real areas of police work, including:

  • Mission Impossible-style challenges
  • Nerf Wars
  • Forensic science and evidence
  • Historical investigations and cold cases
  • Conversations with CPS officers
  • A special four-legged member of the policing team
  • Behind-the-scenes access to the police garage
  • Hands-on activities, teamwork, problem-solving and investigation

Two Crews. One Incredible Camp Experience.

The Best of Policing Fall Camp is divided into two age groups, so campers can take on activities and challenges that are appropriate for their age, interests and stage of development.

🐾 K9 Crew | Ages 6–8

Our K9 Crew is designed for younger campers, with activities focused on exploration, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving and hands-on discovery. Camp experiences are tailored to keep younger campers engaged while introducing them to the exciting world of policing in an age-appropriate way.

🚨 TAC Team | Ages 9–12

Our TAC Team is designed for older campers and offers more challenging opportunities to investigate, problem-solve, explore evidence and take on missions. Activities are adapted to provide a little more depth and challenge while keeping the experience active and engaging.

Both groups will experience the excitement of The Best of Policing, but the specific activities, challenges and level of content are tailored to each age group. This allows campers to get the most out of their two days while ensuring experiences are age appropriate, engaging and fun.

Whether they’re joining the K9 Crew or TAC Team, campers will have the opportunity to explore policing, meet real professionals, get hands-on and discover what happens behind the badge.

Mission Impossible

The Calgary Police Discovery Centre takes on a whole new look when the public has gone home.

Campers will get exclusive access to the museum floor after hours as they take on a series of Mission Impossible-style challenges.

It will be dark. There will be Nerf blasters. There will be clues, obstacles, missions and plenty of opportunities to put teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test.

Working together, campers will need to complete their missions, overcome challenges and use a little stealth along the way.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it…

Nerf Wars

Ready, aim, compete!

Campers will go head-to-head in Nerf Wars, combining strategy, teamwork, quick thinking and accuracy.

And there’s an extra challenge:

Campers vs. staff.

Bring your best strategy and see if the campers can take down the constables!

Step Into the World of Forensic Science

What can a skull tell an investigator?

As part of this Calgary police camp, campers will meet a forensic specialist and explore how forensic science can help investigators understand what happened.

Working with archived models of real skull trauma, campers will use observation and investigative skills to examine evidence and consider what may have happened.

They’ll explore how forensic specialists ask questions, examine evidence and piece together information to help tell the story.

Each age group will also take part in an art activity connected to the experience.

Can you figure out what happened just by following the evidence?

Cold Cases & Historical Investigations

Not every investigation has an easy answer.

Campers will hear fascinating stories from the history of policing and explore real cases where investigators had to work with the evidence available to them.

Some cases were solved.

Some weren’t.

A Calgary Police Discovery Centre historical expert will bring a real historical case to life through storytelling. Campers will listen for clues, examine what investigators knew at the time and consider how modern technology might change the investigation today.

Along the way, campers will practice one of the most important skills in investigation:

Don’t decide the answer first. Follow the clues.

Meet the People Behind the Badge

Campers will get a closer look at the people who make policing happen, from Calgary Police Service constables and specialists to the four-legged members of the team. They’ll hear real stories, ask questions, explore what it’s like to be a police officer, and discover the communication, decision-making, teamwork and problem-solving skills used every day. Campers will also meet a CPS constable and a special four-legged member of the team who helps support the people behind the badge, learning about the importance of connection, wellness and emotional support in policing. Plus, they’ll get exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the police garage, where they can see how police vehicles are maintained and repaired and meet some of the people who keep operations moving. Additional CPS officers, specialists and guests may join throughout the 2-day camp as operational availability allows, giving campers an even broader look at the many roles and specialties that make up policing.

Meet a Very Special Four-Legged Member of the Team

There’s another member of the policing team campers will get to meet.

Campers will spend time with a CPS constable and a special four-legged member of the team who helps support the people behind the badge.

They’ll learn about the importance of connection, wellness and emotional support in policing while meeting one of the most popular members of the team.

Four paws. One very important job.

You’ll find us at Calgary Police Discovery Centre, right next to the Calgary Police Service Headquarters at 5151 – 47th Street NE. Enter through Entrance 3 to access parking.

Need a refund? Email us at least five (5) business days before your camp’s listed start date. YouthLink Summer Camps will not offer a refund if the request is received less than five (5) business days before the camp start date unless it is for a documented medical reason or family emergency.

Please note if the child chooses not to attend camp and / or has a conduct related dismissal, no refund will be given. Full refunds will be issued if CPDC has to cancel a camp.

CPDC does not permit children under 6 years old or older than 12 years old to participate in our summer camps. Campers must have turned 6 years of age prior to the start date of their camp week. CPDC works hard to ensure that all campers get the most out of their summer camp experience and camp activities at CPDC are designed with the targeted age group in mind.

Answer: Your child can attend one day, but the cost for registering includes both days. It is not possible to pay for only one day.

CPDC works hard to ensure that camps are a fun, inclusive, and safe experience for all campers attending. Part of that commitment requires that we ensure that campers follow the summer camp behavioural policies outlined in our camp waivers that all parents / guardians will be required to sign off on prior to the start of camp. If camp behavioural policies are disregarded CPDC reserves the right to ask a camper to leave camp and no refund will be issued.

During your registration, we will ask you to provide a pick-up password. At every pick-up, our camp leaders will ask you, or the pre-authorized adult who is picking up your camper, to provide the password, to ensure that your camper is going home with trusted adults. Please inform anyone who will be picking up your camper of this password policy to avoid any delay. If an adult cannot provide the password upon pick-up, we cannot permit the camper to go home with them until we have contacted a guardian.

You can add an alternate pick-up for your child by sending us the pre-authorized name, phone number, and relationship of who will be picking up the camper in writing through email or adding someone to the camper’s file in the morning when you are dropping them off. This alternate pick-up must provide the camper’s pick-up password, camp staff will not allow campers to go home with an adult who cannot provide a password upon pick-up.

Drop off is between 8:30AM and 9:00AM and pick up is between 3:45PM and 4:15PM. The CPDC parking lot (Entrance 3) is open for drop-off from 8:30AM to 9:00AM and 3:45 PM – 4:15 PM for pick up.

CPDC does not offer early drop offs for our PD camps and cannot provide supervision or registration to campers before 8:30AM.

Please be prompt and contact us should there be any circumstance that causes you to be delayed by calling our front desk at 403-428-4530. Parents / guardians who have not picked up their children by 4:15PM will be charged a $30.00 late fee which must be paid before the beginning of the next camp day. Every additional 15 minutes is an extra $15 charge.

Please let us know promptly if your camper will be absent or late to camp by calling our Front Desk at 403-428-4530.

CPDC does take photos of campers throughout camp to share with parents and in some cases for marketing and donor reporting purposes. The CPDC photo waiver is optional for parents / guardians to sign. If you do not wish to sign the photo waiver for your camper, no photos of your camper will be taken during camp.

No, we are not offering a lunch option this year.

We strive to be a nut-free facility. We ask that all packed lunches and snacks are nut free. However, due to the public nature of the facility some campers and visitors to the museum may show up with a peanut butter and jam sandwich or have eaten peanut butter for breakfast before attending camp. If your camper has a peanut or nut allergy, please let the camp staff know.

Indoor shoes, nut-free lunch, hat and mitts for cold days, jacket, water bottle, any medication

– Personal electronics or cell phones
– Personal valuables that the camper does not wish to lose
– Flip flops or sandals
– Restrictive clothing (i.e. dresses, skirts)
– Nuts or nut products in lunches or snacks (we strive to be a nut free facility)

If your child requires any prescription medications (including Asthma Inhalers) or carries an Epi-Pen, please let your camp leaders know the first morning at check-in. All prescription medications that campers need to carry must be discussed with camp staff at check-in. Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy packaging, labelled with the patient’s name and the physician’s ordered dos on the bottle (pills in Ziploc bags or other packaging are not permitted). Unless otherwise specified by a parent or guardian, camp leaders carry all camper prescriptions.

CPDC does not offer any subsidies or fee assistance for camps.
